Roof Crush Statistics Out of Control, Study Shows

Sunday, December 28th, 2008
John Bisnar asked:

A surprising new report outlines that many of the 10,000 deaths suffered by drivers nationwide could have been prevented if their car’s roof was made properly. The report outlines the fact that most cars have thin and unstable roofs that make the cars dangerous to drive in.

These roofs collapse and crush inward during any rollover situation, causing serious damage and deaths each year. In response to the attention the auto industry has responded with a defense known as the “diving theory” which has proven to be entirely false.

In auto industry documents and other materials that were uncovered over the past three decades researchers found that carmakers knew that stronger roofs would save lives but did nothing about it. In 2005 the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that there was a definitive link between a car’s roof strength, crushing and injuries. Several other studies have shown that stronger roofs save the lives of everyone in the car, even during a rollover or other traumatic accident.

In one Volvo run safety study the car manufacturer revealed that roof structure played a causal role in the rate of head and neck injuries during an accident. Deformations in the roof structure and its ability to be crushed increased the rate of injury and death.

In addition, Volvo’s conclusions added that headspace within the car also saved lives. The less a person’s head touched the roof of their car, the higher the chance of reduced injury and death that person had.

While Volvo released the data to the industry and made steps in improving safety in its own vehicles, most all other carmakers have yet to do the same.

Roof safety has been an issue for the past three decades as carmakers struggled to understand how to make their vehicles safer and more cost-effective. Cutting costs by not putting enough engineering know how into creating a more solid roof has led to increase in injuries and deaths.

American carmakers Chevrolet and Ford have been especially slow to respond to accusations that their roofs are not safe for people to drive under. While carmakers are adding new safety features like air bags and others they do little to work well during a rollover.

The study also revealed that since 1972 fatalities on US highways have decreased, even taking into account the increase in the number of drivers and cars on the roads. Deaths and injuries blamed on roof crushes and rollovers have been on the rise over the past three decades, however.

The new data suggests that stronger roofs would improve driver and rider safety tremendously, keeping in line with all of the other improvements to auto safety over the years.

Saturday, December 20th, 2008
Abc321 asked:

I was able to be selected for Air Traffic Control in the Air Force. I was wondering when I leave after 4 years of this position in the military what civilian reality i’ll be facing. How much should I expect to make at a civilian job starting out etc. I’m just trying to decide if i should go with ATC or pick another job. I scored nearly a perfect score on my aptitude test, i think i got four answers wrong so i have any AF job open.

Interesting Flying Facts

Friday, December 19th, 2008
Lavana James asked:

Although statistics prove otherwise, flying is still considered by many to be a risky option. But once you delve a little deeper into these interesting flying facts, you might start to believe that it is one of the safer means of transportation in today’s global village.

Statistically, it is far more likely that one might be killed prematurely by a dog bite, a bee sting or a bolt of lightning from above than to die in a fatal plane accident. Commercial aviation is clearly one of the safer options of travel and there are a number of reasons why.

Cost of training pilots equivalent to GP’s

We are all well aware of the depth of knowledge required to be a successful medical practitioner. Generally it takes in the region of 7 years of intensive training and a rather large financial commitment to become a doctor and that is only for general medicine. It is enlightening to know that the leading carriers spend about the same amount of money on their pilots; and it has paid dividends – commercial airlines exhibit one of the lowest accident rates worldwide.

The other leading members of the flight cast are the air traffic controllers. These men and women are effectively responsible for all our lives once in the air. You will be pleased to know that they are expected to commit to between 3 - 4 years of training. They are also managed very carefully and spend about 5 hours of an eight hour shift actually controlling the traffic.

Sufficient systems back-up

It is worth bearing in mind that virtually every system on a commercial aircraft has a back-up that can and will take over all tasks should the original system fail. There are also two pilots, at least two engines, two to three autopilots and about three separate computers that are capable of handling the craft in the event of a systems failure. On a 747 where safety is paramount, there are no fewer than 18 tyres!

The mechanisms of flight, be it commercial, private or simply a helicopter tour is strictly scrutinised and, apart from the intensive training of both pilot and controller, it is worth remembering that with every 1 hour in the air, there are on average 12 hours of maintenance on the ground.

Each plane or helicopter has to lodge a flight plan with the relevant authorities and a very interesting byte of information is that every single aircraft has its own dedicated highway, over 16 kilometres wide, that no other aircraft is allowed into.

Odds of premature death

These odds of death from various causes will prove how little we need fear flying, whether in a large commercial carrier, a streamlined private jet or a helicopter.

Commercial airline: 1 in 7 million

Bee sting: 1 in 5.5 million

Lightning: 1 in 1.9 million

Smoking (age 30+): 1 in 600

Heart disease: 1 in 2

Planning a Hot Air Balloon Adventure

Thursday, December 18th, 2008
Travel Mum asked:

There are many places where you can enjoy a memorable hot-air balloon flight such as Australia, New Zealand, United States and United Kingdom. To have a successful flight, there is much work to be done and the experience of the pilot to understand the appropriate wind direction is extremely important. Besides maneuvering the balloon, he has to keep in close contact with the members of the hot air balloon crew, whose task is to collect the passengers and the equipment. During the flight, the pilot will look out for a possible landing site with sufficient space to lay out the balloon. If you are planning for a balloon adventure, the following are some considerations to note :

1. What are the regulations and safety precautions in place ?

Balloons are required to be a fully registered aircraft with the country’s civil aviation and safety authority and they must be subjected to regular airworthiness checks. Pilots need to have sufficient experience before they are allowed to fly with larger balloons. During the flight, the pilot will rely on the radios links to keep in contact with the chase crew as well as with Air Traffic Control and other aircraft flying in the vicinity. You will be given a passenger safety briefing prior to the flight and get a chance to prepare the balloon with the crew.

2. Are there any restrictions on children ?

Different operators will have different age restrictions. Sometimes, children as young as 5 years are allowed to fly; while others only accept a minimum age of 12.

3. Are there any health restrictions ?

You need to inform the operating company of your health problems such as knee, leg, hip or back pains. This is important as it may affect your safety during the flight. Women with more than 12 weeks of pregnancy may be ineligible to fly. You must be able to get in and out of the basket without much effort.

4. How many passengers are allowed for a flight ?

The number of passengers permissible usually depends on the size of the balloon. Balloon operators can carry from two to 10 or more passengers at a time. There are compartments in the balloon baskets, and there will be a specific number in any one compartment.

5. How should I dress for the occasion ?

You are advised to dress warmly and casually. Don’t forget to bring a sweater or a jacket as it gets colder by about 3.5 degrees colder for each 1,000 feet of altitude. You should wear shoes with flat soles, and your top clothing should be made of cotton rather than man-made fibers. Tall passengers should wear a hat to protect themselves from the radiant heat from the burners.

6. What else must I bring ?

You must bring your camera with lots of film. Do bring along a suitable soft case to stow the camera during the landing.

7. What if I am afraid of heights ?

If you are afraid of heights, please inform the pilot prior to the flight so that he can stay low until you are comfortable. There should be no turbulence as the balloon moves with the wind.

8. Under what conditions will the flight be postponed ?

A good flight is always worth the wait. Be prepared for the flight to be postponed if weather conditions are bad. You are always welcome to rebook another date. If a cancellation is likely, the operator may notify you either the evening before, or on the morning of the flight.

9. How long is the entire adventure ?

Generally, the flight takes an hour to complete.

10. Other things to note : There are no toilet facilities aboard and please observe the non-smoking rule. Sometimes, the operator may be able to arrange breakfast, a champagne toast and refreshments on the balloon.

Small Business Goals And Controlling Your Mind.

Saturday, December 13th, 2008
George Collins asked:

When I first came online I was wondering whether this thing is going to work, can you really make money online, it is kind of like thin air. And I said to myself there are other people making money online, I hear about the money they are making, I am not sure if it is true or not, but I am going to delete that out of my mind and move forward and I am going to do it. And so I just did it. Here is another thing, I am just going to get into goals here a little bit. I do not use goals, I have tried that before in my life and it just kind of set me up for failure. People write up goals, I am going to be making a hundred thousand a month, or ten thousand dollars a month, in the next three or six months and they do what they are going to do and it does not happen and they feel like a failure.

I did the same thing with different things, such as high school and did not achieve everything in the time frame and the goal that I set. So I would feel like a failure, even though I accomplished a lot of things and I was a success to other people. Entered a lot of competitions, completed them and finished in the top three in different areas. The thing is I was a success to other people in school, but in my own eyes there are some things that I wanted to accomplish faster or other things that did not happen that I had as a goal. So I would feel like a failure in certain areas and it was all because of goals. What I learned to do is to not even do goals. If I want to do something, I just say I am going to do it. I do not say I am going to create a home based business and make ten thousand dollars a month, I just do it. I do not set a goal, I do not set a time frame, I just go to work and do it and do not look back.

I want to market and generate a lot of traffic, I just do it and do not look back. I never look back, just keep going forward. Do not sit there and become stagnant, goals can also keep you from reaching even higher than where you even thought you could go. If you set a goal to make ten thousand dollars a month and you get there, because the goals that you do achieve, you probably like the competition and the journey to that goal, so when you get there you say okay, and you become stagnant at that point. Say like ten thousand a month, great I am at ten thousand dollars a month, I hit my goal, and I will become stagnant now. Well, who is to say that you could not reach a hundred thousand dollars a month.

But because you chose that goal just to get to the ten thousand dollar mark a month, you can become stagnant there. You got there, you did it, Okay great what is next. But if you just do it you will always end up doing way more than what you will expect. When you start applying this online, the marketing, you will do what you can handle and you will be surprised at how much you can handle. If you were to set a certain goal, you probably would not realize how much traffic you can actually handle or how much business you can handle. So a goal can really limit you when you set goals. Just forget about the goals and just do it, just like the sneaker company said, just do it.

If you want to make ten thousand or twenty thousand dollars a month, just do it. You want to have a home based business, you want to leave your job, just do it. It all comes back to your mind. And it kind of taps into what I was talking about before on fear, about controlling your mind, if you can control your mind, you have to see what you are going to do before you even do it. If you cannot see, which is like a vision of what you are going to do, it is not going to happen. It is like you are just off wandering lost in the wilderness, if you cannot see it, what is suppose to happen is not going to happen.

Pilot License

Sunday, December 7th, 2008
Peter Bankss asked:

The airplane is the nearest thing to animate life that man has created. In the air a machine ceases indeed to be a mere piece of mechanism; it becomes animate and is capable not only of primary guidance and control, but actually of expressing a pilot’s temperament.

Sir Ross Smith, K.B.E., ‘National Geographic Magazine,’ March 1921.

There are many kinds of pilot licenses that you can receive. This book primarily deals with private pilot licenses and certifications. Pilot licenses are issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA.) They are divided into two categories:

certificates and training. A certificate defines the various levels of flying privileges that the pilot has earned. A rating defines the various categories and

classes of aircraft in which the pilot may exercise the privileges of their certificate.

Certificates are:

?? Student pilot

?? Sport pilot

?? Recreational pilot

?? Private pilot

?? Commercial pilot

?? Airline transport pilot

?? Flight instructor

Ratings primarily refer to commercial pilots, airline transport pilots, flight

instructors, and private pilots. Some of the ratings that a pilot can receive are:

?? Airplane – single-engine land

?? Airplane – single-engine sea

?? Airplane – multi-engine land

?? Instrument

?? Glider

?? Rotorcraft or helicopter

Sport Pilot Licenses

The exhilaration of flying is too keen, the pleasure too great, for it to be neglected as a sport.

Orville Wright

Sport pilots fly smaller and lighter planes. The idea is to enable a pilot to fly alight, small plane for pleasure. To fly as a sport pilot, you have to get a sport pilot license which consists of 20 hours of flight time, getting a medical examiner’s certificate, and passing a knowledge test.

sport pilot license allows you to fly for pleasure. It does not teach you how to fly into an air traffic control strip at a busy airport like Chicago O’Hara or New York’s La Guardia airport. Many private pilots flying around today though primarily fly planes as sport pilots do and hence do not need to have taken all the certifications and flight time which they do not use.

Sport pilots are not allowed to fly higher than 10,000 feet above sea level nor are they allowed to fly more than 2,000 feet above the ground level, which ever being higher. Sport pilots do not have to acquire the third-class medical examiner ertificate.

Recreational Pilot License

The recreational pilot license was created in 1987. Unlike the sport license, the recreational pilot license has almost the same requirements as a private pilot license such as acquiring the third-class medical examiner certificate, yet with more limitations and not as many benefits. In fact, currently, there are a little over than a thousand recreational pilot licenses in use today.

A recreational pilot can not fly all the planes that a sport pilot can. A recreationalpilot can fly only single-engine aircraft and helicopters, with a horsepower of 180or less, and can only fly planes with four seaters or less. At the same time, arecreational pilot can only have one passenger.
