Leadership by Saying No

Great leaders have always been posed with the challenge of pressures from numerous directions; in accommodating all. Most of us recognize the thick skin leaders must have to be successful and effective. In most situations leaders want to be in a position to appease and keep everyone content and often dread the position of having to say No in order to maintain the solvency of an organization.  As we have become a more comprehensive world decisions have also become more difficult and required the boldness and courage of leaders to make the right decision. Leaders have to become gutsy to say No when the need to have the foresight for the betterment of a country or whatever the situation may be. It truly needs to be reviewed from a perspective of timing and weighing the positive and negatives to a situation.

Let’s now take a look at past great leaders whom have been placed in a situation of leadership by saying No. During President Ronald Reagan’s administration he was confronted to make a bold decision; when the threat of a strike by the Air Traffic Controls had tried to strong arm the President. The Air Traffic Controllers had been lobbying for higher wages and had forgotten about their employment contractual agreement. Their Position of Striking would have placed America in a very vulnerable position domestically and internationally. President Reagan had forewarned the Air Traffic Controls that if they strike they would immediately be fired on the spot without recourse; they had forgotten about the governmental regulations and security policies issues that directly impacted their profession. Some called the President some pretty awful names, a fascist being one of them.  In my view President Ronald Reagan indeed has been one of Americas great Presidents and without a doubt amongst the greatest; if not the greatest, in knowing how to communicate to the people of America. Therefore, President Reagan saying No to the Air Traffic Controls was like what it must have been like seeing Picasso doing his very artistic work, seeing President Reagan handling leadership by saying No was observing political Art at its best.

Let’s take a look of what a great management guru has said about leaders whom have said No and the necessity to say No. Through discussion of this article I want to paraphrase the great Peter Drucker who during an interview once said that “Good leaders know how to establish a mission. And another thing, they know how to say No. Dr. Drucker further stated: “Effective leaders are the ones who learn how to say No and stick with it. It is important to keep in mind that leaders ought not to be leaders for the purpose of being popular for those whom at time end up being popular are also the one’s who get nothing done.

When one of America’s industrial great leaders such as Henry Ford the founder of the Ford Motor Company was posed with his employee’s of threatening to strike while they were attempting to unionize Mr. Ford said to them “If you strike on me I’ll starve you.” The workers didn’t strike but Mr. Ford formed one of the best employee benefit package for his employees of his time. When Mr. Ford said No he meant it and No was absolutely No. But yet his leadership led to taking care of his employee’s and his employee’s loved him, just like most American’s love Ronald Reagan.

Advancement Opportunities in the Airline Industry

In every industry throughout the world, there is a need for workers to set goals for themselves in order to motivate hard work and better results on a daily basis. There are few fields, however, with the daily pressures and competition of the airline industry. Indeed, pilots and mechanics at major international airlines have to remain perfect in order to fulfil their job requirements and advance in the industry. For these professionals, there are a number of professional benchmarks that can indicate progress and improvement throughout a career.

Pilots in every level of the airline and flight industry look to move from the entry level position of first officer to the higher paying and higher pressure job of captain. First officers typically have to work five to ten years to advance to the captain’s seat, putting in long hours for minimal pay in comparison to their colleagues. However, the rewards of advancing to the position of captain are incomparable. Young pilots who stick with airline jobs see their pay multiplied several times over while doing what they love. There is no better goal than being financially secure while living out your dream.

Mechanics, maintenance professionals, and other “behind the scenes” workers in the airline industry can advance in several stages throughout their career. With a few years of exemplary work under their belt, the average mechanic can advance to a team leadership or crew management position. The pay increase and ability to use innovative organization on a daily basis are enough reward for these hard working professionals. From there, managers and crew leaders can advance to facilities management positions. Planes and airliners are kept in hangars that include some of the most sophisticated equipment in the world. Exceptional mechanics can achieve high positions within the industry.

Tower personnel, including traffic controllers, can also use their technical skills and intuition in higher positions. These professionals can move to positions of middle management, where they oversee an entire crew of controllers and monitor efficiency to keep the skies safe for millions of passengers. Management positions can lead to executive positions on two different fronts. A particular airline may be interested in experienced air traffic controllers for positions in airline management or research and development. As well, air traffic controllers and other tower personnel can move onto positions of management within a particular airport. In the end, it is important for every airline professional to aim high in order to succeed in the industry.

Cyber Insecurity vs Internet Security

Pandora’s box has been opened and the explosion of information both personal and non-personal seems to be limitless and increases exponentially. And according to the National Opinion Poll taken in January of 2007 half the UK harbors a “deep mistrust” due to security concerns. Not only is there a deep public mistrust but, the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology are inquiring into the need for personal Internet Security because of the growing use of home computers, expansion of broadband, internet banking and commerce (Brent MacLean “A new look at Internet Security” Monday September 10, 2007).

Every one is talking extensively ( ISP Associations, Richard Clayton of the Cambridge Security Lab, John Carr of the Children’s Charities Coalition on Internet Safety, as well as Johnathan Zittrain of the Oxford Internet Institute and many others), gathering evidence of information and compiling it all for what? Sadly, most businesses and citizens still do not take the threat posed by cyber-insecurity seriously.

You would think with dependency of economies relying on certain infrastructures involving the Internet and information exchange between key service providers, that a disruption would certainly result in loss of lives, loss of property, and the collapse of public confidence globablly. Today simple domestic hacking is not the issue that will bring on devastating destruction like those designed by terrorist activities directed at nuclear plants, banking systems, hospitals, air traffic control as well as domain name servers, the possibilities are limitless. However, it is imperative to remove these personal and public computers from the arsenal of cyber terrorists as well as cybercriminals. With 225 million Internet users in North America (Nielson-Netratings), the personal computer dominates the Internet and at the same time is the most vulnerable. Millions of PCs are under the control of “zombie masters”. Red Herring, the technical business journal, estimated that in 2005 a 172,000 computers were hijacked and taken over each day and became “zombies” and under the control of a hacker. By 2007, Secure Computing, which tracks the Internet landscape, identified more than 500,000 new zombies per day that were hijacked and under the control of “bot” herders. Triple the level only two years earlier. The FBI says that because of their wideley distributed capabilities, botnets are a growing threat to national security, the national information infrastructure, and the economy.

The total number of compromised computers on the Internet is not known; however, Vince Cerf, Father of the Internet, estimates that about 150 million PCs currently connected to the Internet and are part of botnets. Based on FBI reports and other independent researchers the aforementioned number may be significantly higher. The typical home computer is attached to “always on” broadband facilities, severely compromised with malware (viruses, spyware, Trojans, keyloggers, etc.), usually without degradation of their ordinary capabilities and doing the bidding of their “zombie master”. Hacking, virus dissemination, denial od service (DoS), theft of personal data, ID fraud, keyloggers, spamming, distribution of pornography, spying through webcams, click fraud and many other cyber exploits are all now almost wholly orchestrated via zombie networks.

Computers weren’t designed for security; they were designed to perform complex work. As complex as computers are, each computer has 65,000 open ports (doorways) to the Internet; a simple element that leaves them vulnerable. You might wonder why an individual would want control of a herd of zombies, there are several reasons. For exploits whether it’s a denial of service, to bring down the servers of banks, major corporations, or a competitor. Inherently, whenever a computer says “hello” to another computer, that computer must respond with a “hello” back. A “bot herder” with tens of thousands of computers under their control has all of them say hello at the same time to your computer or a network of computers, what do think happens. Most likely the responding PC or server is overwhelmed and crashes, it simply can’t respond to that many hellos. A botnet can be purchased on the black market to carry out attacks. Zombie-making virus kits can be purchased on the net, requiring little or no technical knowledge and which provides the breeding ground for future international cybercriminals and the training ground for cybergangs (terrorists).

What are we to do? Implementing new laws when it’s already difficult to pursue and in some cases unenforceable and with cross-border criminal investigations not to mention the resources needed are vast and costly with little results.

How do we secure the Internet now? One idea is to improve administrative, regulatory, and technical solutions to produce a safer Net and then apply resources to fortify banks, airports, power plants from the insecure internet we have allowed to develop. It begins with securing the end-user and creating an awareness that we are all responsible for the safety of the Internet and we all need to “Become Responsible Cybercitizens”.

We the people have to make an effort to make sure our machines run clean and free of malware (viruses, spyware, trojans, etc.). That involves current patches, updates, upgrades, and professional software technologies. It also obligates everyone of us to make sure that we have not been compromised by having our computers serviced by a security technician and assured that there is no malware present. There is a service, the Invisus PC security service, that will provide a fully managed computer security service including unlimited security technical support plus several additional benefits that will earn you the title of a “Responsible Cybercitizen”.

Requiring ISPs to scan data traffic going to and from computers attached to their networks for unusual patterns of traffic and then deny them Internet access until it has been determined they are not zombies. We can also ask the ISP to provide remote patches, updates and software updates. However, the ISPs will bulk at the cost, liability, autonomy, support, and delivery. Or have our ISPs provide a value-added service similar to subscription-based services offered by the Invisus PC security service which not only provides for a hassle-free computing experience but, is a total security package locking down the end-users computer for a minimum monthly fee.

In order to succeed we must meld security and convenience. The consumer doesn’t want to be responsible for their security. All they want to know is how to turn their computer on and off. Unfortunately, we can’t have our cake and eat it too. The time has come to learn how to maintain a safe and healthy computer (saving the consumer both time and money) void of infections that keep spreading and infecting other computers. It’s not necessary to be technically savvy to operate a computer, like your automobile there’s no need to be a technically savvy mechanic but, it is important to make sure your car is in good operating condition not only for its performance but, for the safety of others. We have laws to assure us the security of cars and their owners are safe. Those who are ignorant of how to maintain the safety of an automobile are required to perform certain responsibilities to insure the safety of their vehicle for others as well as the owner of the car. To insure the safety of others we require a certain level of education and knowledge of the rules of the road. You can’t drive without insurance or a drivers license, which means that you have undertaken and understand some level of instructions.

You may disagree but, unfortunately as impossible as it may be practically, politically, and ethically, to require every consumer… including the ignorant, the poor, and even the wealthy, to be legally responsible for keeping their computer in a state of reasonable security, the fact is you are guilty until proven innocent. So, the next best approach might be to offer to try and educate them but we probably cannot impose a “computer-driving license”. Again, we may be able to offer an alternative by requiring the consumer to take necessary steps to assure that their computers are serviced and up-to-date with professional security software and that they are checked and given a clean bill of health; free of malware.

The most important manufacturers of civil transport aircraft, taken on a worldwide basis, include the following:

Airbus – It is a subsidiary of EADS, a huge European aerospace corporation, and manufactures aircraft on their behalf. Airbus has its base in Toulouse in France, and it manufactures nearly half of the world’s jet airliners. It has sixteen sites within Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Spain, and employs a total of around 57,000 people across these sites.

Boeing – It is a major defense and aerospace company with a manufacturing function based in Seattle. In terms of revenue, it is the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world, as well as the second-largest aerospace and defense contractor, globally. In fact, it holds the position of being the largest exporter in the United States.

Bombardier – It a major aircraft manufacturer with headquarters in Quebec in Canada. It has a versatile product range including regional aircraft, business jets, mass transportation equipment, recreational equipment, such as snowmobiles, and is a financial services provider. The aerospace division accounts for around 50% of the company’s income. It’s best selling aircraft include the Dash 8 and CRJ lines of regional airliners. The Learjet company is a subsidiary of Bombardier and manufactures jets under the Learjet name.

Embraer – It is a Brazilian aerospace company that manufactures commercial, military, and corporate aircraft, together with associated aerospace services. In respect of worldwide aircraft manufacturers, it has the third largest yearly delivery of commercial aircraft, behind Boeing and Airbus. Its headquarters and principal production facilities are in São Paulo.

Tupolev – It is a renowned Russian aerospace and defence company, with headquarters centred in Moscow. It is understood that the Russian government is planning to merge Tupolev with other famed aircraft manufacturers, including Mikoyan, Ilyushin, Irkut, Sukhoi, and Yakovlev as a new company named United Aircraft Corporation. Development, manufacturing and overhaul of both civil and military aircraft and weapons systems are just some of the aerospace ventures that the company is involved in. It is also involved in the technologies associated with missile and naval aviation.

                       

In terms of individual specialisations, it can be said that:

Boeing, Airbus, and Tupolev concentrate on wide and narrow-bodied jet airliners

Bombardier and Embraer concentrate on regional airliners, which refer to small airliners designed to fly between 35 and 100 passengers from point to point on short-haul flights. Such small airliners are most suitable for the regional divisions of the larger international airlines.

In order that these manufacturers may function efficiently, extensive networks of parts suppliers, from around the globe, specialising in their own niche areas, provide appropriate support. Such backup is all the more necessary since, in some instances, the manufacturer will provide only the initial design, with final assembly in their own plants.

The Chinese ACAC consortium, a subsidiary of Aviation Industries of China I (AVIC I), formed in 2002 by various Chinese aviation companies, will also soon enter the civil transport market with its ACAC ARJ21 regional jet. The ARJ21 is a twin-engined airliner and the first passenger jet to be developed and manufactured by the People’s Republic of China.

Radar Distance Learning - Tracking Your Flight Path to Success

A radar distance learning program needs to be approved by the FAA to have value. There is a big demand for radar operators and technicians in the military, as well as in the civilian world. The majority of civilian air traffic controllers are employed by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration).

In the military, radar operators are responsible for determining the position of ships, tracking aircraft and missiles, directing artillery fire, forecasting the weather and aiding navigation. Radar operators also play a very important role as civilian air traffic controllers, ship navigators and service technicians.

To become an FAA air traffic controller, you need to be a US citizen and be less than 30 years of age. It helps if your high school subjects included science, algebra and geometry. A radar distance learning program from a college that is not approved by the FAA may not have much value.

Training

The military provides classroom training as well as on the job training to help you to operate and maintain the equipment, identify aircraft, missiles, ships and submarines. You are also taught to compute the direction, speed and altitude of an aircraft, or missile.

At present, the FAA hires people who have graduated from 14 approved schools across the US. The list of approved schools is available on the FAA website, as well as on the on the website of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA). The FAA-approved colleges may not provide radar distance learning programs.

After enrolling in an FAA-accredited program, students must take the FAAs authorized pre-employment test. You must receive a qualifying score in the FAA-approved pre-employment test, complete the FAA-approved program and receive an official school recommendation, to be eligible for employment by the FAA.

FAA-Approved Courses

Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology has formed a partnership with the FAA, which is called the Air Traffic Control - Collegiate Training Initiative program. This program is meant to academically prepare students who are interested in a career in air traffic control.

The Department of Aviation at Hampton University offers a Bachelor of Science Degree program in Air Traffic Control. This is one of the programs that have been approved by the FAA.

A radar distance learning program that is not approved by the FAA may not help you to find employment as an air traffic controller. So be sure to find out if the one you are interested in has such approval. If it is approved, investigate it further to determine whether it meets your other needs as well.
